Support is not just about processes or payments. For foster carers, it’s about knowing that someone is there to listen, guide, and step up when in matters most.
Every fostering journey is different, but carers consistently tell us that support plays a key role in making them feel confident, capable and never on their own.
“Jen, our supervising social worker, is amazing. She is always straight and honest with us. She checks in with us regularly, even texting when she is not in work. She came out to see us every day for the first week when we had a new child with us. She is really supportive and makes sure that we get everything that we need. We have nothing but good things to say about our supervising social worker.”
The local authority gives a huge amount of support in practical terms, for example, regular support groups, coffee mornings, family events, mentoring (particularly useful!) and a large suite of training courses. There is an out of hours duty line which is open 7 days a week until 12pm for when the office is closed and an emergency line as well for after 12pm. Your own Supervising Social Worker provides a huge amount of support, as do the wider team.

how we support foster carers across wales
Every Local Authority in Wales, from Anglesey to Newport, has signed up to the Foster Wales National Commitment – an agreed package of training, support and rewards offered to every Foster Wales carer.
This commitment sets out the core support you can expect, ensuring you feel valued, informed and supported throughout your fostering journey.
- From your initial assessment with a qualified social worker to ongoing guidance from a dedicated Foster Wales team member, you’ll receive consistent professional support, along with regular opportunities to share your views.
- Carers also benefit from peer support, tailored learning and development, at least six support groups each year, and a minimum of two social events for the whole household.
- You’ll receive newsletters, discount schemes, a paid membership to The Fostering Network, and support to create your foster carer profile to help children settle smoothly into your home. Foster Wales also recognises your dedication with appreciation gestures and long‑service certificates, ensuring you feel valued every step of the way.
